GASTRIC SLEEVE
NEW BODY NEW LIFE
What is a Gastric Sleeve?
The Gastric Sleeve, also known as Vertical Gastric Sleeve, Sleeve Gastrectomy, or simply “The Sleeve”, is a laparoscopic procedure that removes between 75% and 80% of the stomach, resulting in a tubular, long and drastically smaller stomach.
Who is the Ideal Patient?
It’s one of the most effective surgeries, ideal for patients with morbid obesity and whose situation no longer allows them to lose weight without a bariatric procedure.
This procedure also helps reducing the risks and symptoms of metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, were the patient that has gone through a Gastric Sleeve procedure and therefore had a substantial loss of weight, has the possibility to suspend its insulin treatment. Other diseases that can be reduced or even disappeared are high blood pressure and sleep apnea.
The Gastric Sleeve is definitely not for everyone, since it the patient will keep only 20% of his or her stomach. Therefore, the cosmetic surgeon must confirm the patient has morbid obesity and no other weight-loss methods can help him anymore.
How is it performed?
The procedure begins by making a few small incisions in the patient’s belly to insert a laparoscope – an instrument with an extremely small camera that sends pictures to a monitor- The surgeon will then insert other medical instruments through the additional incisions and remove 3/4 of your stomach. Finally, he’ll reattach the rest of your stomach to form the “sleeve” or tube.
For this surgery, you must stay 1 night in the hospital, which means you can go back home the day after the procedure.
The surgery lasts around 2 hours and you must be on observation for 1 day.
Recovery Process
Recovery is around 1 week long, and you’ll start seeing final results around the 2nd week after the procedure, once your body has completely recovered. You must attend to a check-up consultation 7 days after the procedure.
A special diet is mandatory since it will reinforce the weight loss while taking care of the patient’s health, both before and after the surgery. The surgeon will specify this diet.
